Cartilage X, Inc. is a team of professionals specializing in Biomechanics from Simon Bolívar University. They have innovated a technological process to treat microtia, a congenital deformity of the outer ear. Microtia may take four forms: a slightly smaller appearing ear; a partial ear; the absence of an outer ear with only a minimal external structure; and the total absence of the outer ear. Statistics reflect a major incidence of this defect, and over the years, surgeons developed a process for reconstruction of a patient’s ear involving a complicated series of operations that included extracting the patient’s costal cartilage and thereafter reconstructing the ear. The Cartilage X, Inc. team developed a process of creating ear implants through tissue engineering, thus achieving a simpler reconstruction of ears for patients with this pathology. They developed a less invasive process applying 3D printing technology using biocompatible materials that reduces the number of surgeries, facilitates the specialist’s work, reduces the operation time and most importantly from the patient’s point of view, offers better compatibility and aesthetic results.
